On Tuesday, the Brookings Institution has an event on the topic « Is American the New France? » It seems that this question has been in the air for while.

In this new video, co-produced by the Center for Freedom and Prosperity and Reason TV, I argue that it would be a terrible idea for the United States to become the next France, a land of high taxes, regulation, and government spending. Contrary to what the elite opinion might think, these policies do not guarantee a glass of wine at every meal. However, they do hold the promise of low economic growth, higher unemployment rates, and lower standards of living.

What’s more, as George Mason University economist Dan Klein — who lives part of the time in Sweden — rightfully told me recently, “Not only is France/Sweden not doing so great but: THERE ARE BIG DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THOSE COUNTRIES AND THE U.S. Those differences mean that bad policies in France or Sweden are less destructive there than they would be here. The successes of those countries are achieved not because of interventionist policies, but in spite of them.”

When I was asked to appear on The Daily Show, the news-with-views edgy-comedy TV program, I was reluctant. The issue: whether “enhanced interrogation techniques” used to pry information about terrorist plots from al-Qaeda leaders should be regarded as torture, and those who used such techniques prosecuted. How would Jon Stewart, the acerbic and unabashedly liberal host, make this issue funny? How would I make it serious?

In the end, I agreed. Why? Because millions of Americans don’t read newspapers, web-zines, and wonky blogs. If my mission is to tell the public what I believe to be the truth about life-and-death issues, I have to be willing to go where the public is.

As always on TV, I’d have to make my case in sound bites — though, in this instance, many would be swallowed by Jon’s punch lines, and by the studio audience’s laughter, cheers, and hoots. I figured I’d better try to prepare myself by running an interview in my head. What follows is the interview I fantasized.

JON STEWART: So, Cliff, let’s get to the point: How can you support torture!?!?!

CLIFF MAY: Actually, Jon, I don’t. But more important: The CIA officials who have performed harsh interrogations do not support torture. The lawyers who wrote the memos telling the CIA what was permitted and what was not permitted don’t support torture. Avec Nancy Pelosi, Pinocchio fait souche aux USA

Toujours au rayon « torture », signalons, en plus de la lombosciatalgie qui me cisaille le dos depuis deux jours (ça m’apprendra à jouer les plaquistes tout le week-end sans ma ceinture de force), les propos de Nancy Pelosi, l’actuelle présidente de la chambre des représentants des EUA. Celle-ci, tout en commentant la récente divulgation des dossiers guantanamesques de la CIA, prétendait qu’elle n’était pas au courant du fait que l’on utilisait le waterboarding sur certains détenus de Guantanamo. J’ai là aussi éclaté de rire, ce qui lorsqu’on traîne une lombosciatalgie ne va pas sans provoquer ce qui tient plus d’un supplice chinois que cubain.

Ce qui ne m’arrêtera pas car j’informe Madame Pelosi qu’elle peut d’ores et déjà se préparer à me traîner devant les tribunaux (Lire la suite…)

La « torture » pour les nuls

Alors que j’écoutais mais surtout regardais sur BFMTV le journal de Ruth Elkrief, avec un plaisir difficilement dissimulable aux yeux de ma femme (aïe! pas la tête) tant ma Ruth est belle, belle au point qu’elle me ferait presque oublier Marie Drucker… mon dieu Ruth sois mienne (aïe! pas la tête chérie)… Où en étais-je moi déjà ? Ah oui !

Alors que je regardais attentivement l’un des JT de Madame Elkrief où on y débattait des interrogatoires poussés subis à Guantanamo par nos gentils humanislamistes, voilà qu’un Jean-Kevin à crinière, écrivant pour Le Point, nous fait le coup du sanglot du petit homme blanc, avec un larmoyant « comment voulez-vous que nous soyons crédibles en matière de droits de l’homme lorsqu’on apprend que l’un des prisonniers de Guantanamo a subi à 180 reprises le supplice du waterboarding (simulacre de noyade) ».
