Ah, les délices du monde « mutipolaire »!
Dès qu’il y a perception de faiblesse américaine, des bricoles arrivent dans le monde:
Carter ne soutient pas le Shah, résultat : Khomeiny
Carter aime chrétiennement les Soviets, résultat : ils envahissent l’Afghanistan
Clinton ne fait rien contre Ben Laden, il baise l’armée américaine en Somalie (« veuillez définir le mot ‘baiser’, svp »), résultat : le 11 septembre
Bush s’en va avec 32% de popularité, Obama arrive avec 100% de naiveté, résultat : les apparatchiks du KGB envahissent la Géorgie.

Last year, President Mikheil Saakashvili invited me along on a helicopter flight to see Tskhinvali, South Ossetia’s capital, from the air. We viewed it at some distance to avoid Russian antiaircraft missiles manned by Russian personnel.
He pointed out a lone hilltop sprinkled with houses some 10 miles inside Georgian territory — scarcely even a town. Much of the population, namely the Georgians, had long ago been purged by Russian-backed militias, leaving behind a rump population of Ossetian farmers and Russian security forces posing as Ossetians. « We have offered them everything, » he said, « language rights, land rights, guaranteed power in parliament, anything they want, and they would take it, if the Kremlin would let them. » (Lire la suite…)

Russia declared a provisional cease-fire after battering Georgia for five days, a conflict that not only gave the U.S. a bloody nose but threatens to upend a decade of geopolitical thinking in Washington.
Challenges seen as having died with the Soviet Union, such as access to Central Asian oil and gas supplies, have made a hasty return to Washington’s foreign-policy agenda and will present new and unexpected challenges for America’s next president. Other priorities, such as building a missile-defense shield in Eastern Europe and expanding the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to Russia’s borders, now appear troubled, if not dead, in the short term.
