Dans Le Figaro daté de vendredi, le directeur de la publication et le directeur de la rédaction du quotidien réagissent à la mise sous protection policière d’un philosophe menacé de mort pour avoir écrit une tribune très critique sur l’islam dans les colonnes du Figaro.

In the Friday edition of Le Figaro, the editorial director and the managing editor of the daily react to the fact that a philosopher under death threats had to be put under police protection for having written a very critical essay on Islam in the columns of Le Figaro.

For 10 days, a professor of philosophy has been threatened with death because he wrote a very critical essay on Islam in Le Figaro. He had to stop teaching, leave his home and be put under the protection of the police.

Le Figaro is a newspaper opened to various opinions. Every day, we welcome in our columns contradictory points of view, debates and polemics. Of course, we have a strong editorial line and we do not share all of these ideas, far from it, nor the manner in which they are sometimes expressed. But we consider that, beyond information, the role of a newspaper is to provide its readers all that can allow them to analyze the news in depth. And, to understand our world, to form an opinion, it is also necessary to know how to look at those who live in another way and listen to those who think in another way.

We therefore condemn with the utmost vigor the serious infringements to freedom of thought and freedom of expression tha this affair has caused.

Mon hypothèse est la suivante: les gesticulations, menaces, intimidations brandies par les fondamentalistes musulmans aurait comme visée ultime de sauver l’Islam de l’oubli dans lequel il était en train de sombrer inexorablement. Les dignitaires musulmans, toutes tendances confondues, et plus récemment en Irak et en Iran ont tiré la sonnette d’alarme sur l’effondrement du taux de natalité dans les pays musulmans. Ce cri d’alarme est destiné, pour qui connait le langage métaphorique des arabes, à mettre en garde la nation musulmane contre la désertification religieuse qui la guette.

Tous les prétextes semblent bons pour faire un spin médiatique de chaque événement concernant l’Islam, afin de cacher une crise de la foi sans précédent dans les pays arabes, et rassembler et recruter de nouveaux fidèles. Les appels à la conversion vont dans ce sens également. Le drame palestinien est sciemment exploité afin de créer un point de fixation avertissant les musulmans que leur religion est en danger de mort. La sionisation opportuniste de Jérusalem, déclarée subitement troisième ville sainte de l’Islam, alors qu’elle ne figure pas en tant que telle dans le Coran, sert le même dessein.

Le battage médiatique peut donner l’illusion, avec la complicité irrémissible de nos medias, d’une mobilisation intense des fidèles de cette religion, rassemblements savamment manipulés ainsi qu’à la nature offensive de l’Islam triomphant…Or, il n’en est rien, et l’Amérique et Israël, désignés comme responsables des malheurs de l’Islam, ne sont, en réalité, que les paravents d’une faillite annoncée.

Robert Redeker, professor of philosophy and essayist, is the target of death threats since the publication of a column in Le Figaro of September 19th, 2006, in which he criticized Islam and the prophet Mahomet. He receives threatening messages in his e-mail box every day. The Direction of the Surveillance of the Territory (DST) has spotted WebPages on Islamic Jihadists forums, in English, with his picture, street address and map to go to his home. He is called a « pig » on these sites.

Mr. Redeker, who teaches philosophy at the high school in Saint-Orens-de-Gameville (Haute – Garonne), was put under police protection. He had to leave his home and has not been able to teach since September 20th.  » Today, I live on the territory of the Republic as an alien, he said to Le Monde. I am like a prisoner, I lost my freedom to come and go. I feel abandoned, since I have not received any logistical help from the Ministry of Education. « 

Prime minister, Dominique de Villepin, deemed this « Fatwa » « unacceptable », on Friday, September 29th on RMC-Info. The day before, on RTL, Minister for Education, Gilles de Robien, had declared « solidaire  » with the professor of philosophy, adding however:  » By signing this free column, this teacher implicated National Department of Education. A civil servant should be careful, moderate, and prudent in any circumstances. « 
Robert Redeker is surprised by the minister’s comments:  » If this principle of moderation had been applied, there would have been no intellectual life in France, since many thinkers were civil servants. Besides, the role of a politician is not to say what we must think, but to protect our freedom of speech.  » The teacher also wonders about  » the absence of reactions of the teachers labor unions and the many associations that defend laicity, which are more ready to criticize Catholicism than Islam « .

In his article, titled “What should the free world do while facing Islamist intimidation?” Mr. Redeker wrote about Mahomet: “A merciless war chief, plunderer, slaughterer of Jews and a polygamist, such is the man revealed through the Koran… Whereas Judaism and Christianity are religions whose rites spurn violence by delegitimizing it, Islam is a religion that exalts violence and hatred in its everyday rites and sacred book. Hatred and violence dwell in the book with which every Muslim is brought up, the Koran.”

The issue of the newspaper in which this article was published was banned in Tunisia and in Egypt.

On the front page of the September 29th edition of Le Figaro Francis Morel, editorial director, and Nicolas Beytout, managing editor, condemned  » with the strongest vigor the serious infringements to freedom of thought and to freedom of speech that this affair has caused « .

Le Figaro Says it is Sorry for Publishing Islamophobe Article

Mr Pierre Rousselin, Senior Editor for Le Figaro expressed on the Arabic news channel Al Jazeera his regrets concerning the publication of an islamophobe and heinous article signed by Redeker, published in le Figaro on September 19, 2006. Mr. Rousselin declared that the publication of such an article was a mistake, and stated that this text does not express the opinion of the newspaper but that it was published within the framework of an opinion column that only engages its author. He added that sometimes errors occur, and texts are published without preliminary checking.

On September 19, 2006, Le Figaro published an islamophobe article signed Robert Redeker, Professor of Philosophy at the Pierre-Paul-Riquet Highschool in Saint-Orens de Gammeville. Redeker’s article was posted on the Figaro’s website the day it was published in the newspaper then removed from site the next day.
